STIS Teaching Approaches Training
Project Overview:
As the instructional coach at Surat Thani International School (STIS), I led a pivotal project to standardize teaching approaches across the institution. This initiative was driven by the school’s goal to attain accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and to strengthen its position as an international school. The focus was on elevating instructional quality and ensuring consistency in teaching methods.
Problem:
STIS faced significant challenges in preparing for WASC accreditation due to inconsistencies in teaching methods and instructional strategies. The absence of a cohesive framework led to uneven learning outcomes, which impacted students and made the accreditation process more difficult.
Solution:
To address these issues, I developed an instructor-led training program introducing the DCA Framework (Direct Instruction, Cooperative/ Collaborative Learning, and Active Learning). The program was designed to give teachers the tools to align with best practices while enhancing student learning outcomes. Key elements of the solution included:
Facilitator's Guide:
A comprehensive guide was created to assist instructors in delivering the training and ensure consistent employee training. The guide included:
The guide featured learner personas that represented the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the teachers. These helped facilitators tailor the training to different needs, including teachers with English Language Learner experience or those following more traditional classroom models.
The guide also provided practical advice on engaging participants, managing group activities, and using real-time feedback to adjust the pace of the workshop.

Participant Guide:
The Participant Guide was an essential resource during the training, empowering teachers to effectively engage with the DCA framework. This comprehensive workbook not only provided structure and clarity but also served as a valuable reference throughout the workshop.

Presentation:
A dynamic presentation was developed to guide the workshop. It helps guide the participants through the DCA framework using the framework itself. Key aspects of the presentation included:
Classroom Management Techniques: Strategies for managing an active and collaborative classroom, including using noise meters, timers, call-backs, and clear directions for smoother transitions during hands-on activities.
Hands-On Lesson Planning: Groups of teachers worked together to create lesson plans using the DCA framework, focusing on incorporating Direct Instruction, Active Learning, and Cooperative Learning.
The video below is a partial sample of the interactive slideshow presentation delivered to participants.
Results and Impact:
The DCA framework significantly improved instructional consistency, enhanced student engagement, and better aligned the school’s teaching practices with WASC accreditation criteria.
Teachers reported increased confidence in applying the techniques, and the shared resources fostered a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
The program was key in advancing the school’s accreditation efforts and setting a new standard for instructional excellence.
